Meanwhile, New York Yankees blockbuster offseason addition Juan Soto is the favorite in the AL, and he no longer has to deal with a surging veteran, as Mike Trout's MVP campaign is over with the news that he underwent surgery for a torn meniscus.

Trout could return this season, but his stint on the injured list will surely make it impossible for him to win this award.

Witt is actually ahead of Soto in terms of fWAR this season, but only marginally so. The two young stars offer stolen base upside that Soto likely doesn't which could help their chances to overtake him as the season progresses.
